AUSTIN, Texas (June 8, 2023) – Universal Technical Institute-Austin, a leading workforce solutions provider of transportation and skilled trades education programs, celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Month in May by naming Matt Thomas the “Instructor of the Year” for 2022-2023. Thomas is an automotive instructor, technical team leader, ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) L1 master technician and Ford senior master technician.

Consideration for “Instructor of the Year” includes results of the Education Satisfaction Index and Course Completion Rates. The instructor’s overall contribution to the campus, through peer mentoring and departmental support, is also considered in the selection process.

"We are thrilled to recognize Matt as the 'Instructor of the Year' for the 2022-2023 academic year. His dedication to student success, combined with his extensive experience as an automotive instructor and master technician, sets an exceptional example for our entire campus community. Matt's passion for education and his unwavering commitment to our students make him truly deserving of this prestigious honor,” commented Julie Mueller, UTI-Austin campus president.

Thomas joined UTI in January 2022 and quickly demonstrated his passion for education and dedication to the campus community. Prior to his teaching role at UTI, Thomas gained valuable experience working at several leading auto companies including Ford and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Thomas also honorably served nine years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

"I am incredibly honored and humbled to receive the “Instructor of the Year” award for the 2022-2023 academic year," said Thomas. "Teaching at UTI has been a truly rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for the automotive industry with our students. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire campus community, and I am proud to be part of such an exceptional team.”

The “Instructor of the Year” winners at all 16 UTI and MIAT College of Technology campuses nationwide were announced at their respective campuses last month. UTI industry partner Snap-On also helped to recognize them by sponsoring a feature wall at each campus that includes a photo of the “Instructor of the Year.”
