Feb. 22, 2011 - And the Oscar Goes To...23,000 People Who Have Received Blood from UTI and MMI Blood Drives

Feb. 22, 2011 - Blood drive coordinators throughout Arizona received the red carpet treatment at the 2011 United Blood Services “Valentines For Life Luncheon,” held on Friday, February 18, at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix.

In an awards ceremony prior to the luncheon, America Segura, blood drive coordinator for UTI-Avondale, took home the coveted Hero Award, bringing in 3,443 units of donated blood from the campus...the highest amount of donated units from any of the 22 Hero Award winners. The Hero Award is the most prestigious and difficult award to earn, signifying outstanding leadership in blood drive coordination.

Accepting her award from Mike Romano, campus president for UTI-Avondale, America donned a red “ hero” cape and posed for pictures with Patrick Hoisington, vice president of student council at UTI-Avondale. “I feel passionate about blood donation because of the personal and lifesaving impact it has had on my family, “ America said. “I am grateful to be part of a organization that promotes the importance of participation in blood drives and community service. Being the leading blood supplier in Arizona is great, but more importantly, we help save lives.”

Later at the Valentines luncheon, America also accepted the Power Red Award for coordinating the highest level of Power Red Donations: 749! The Power Red Award is given to the coordinator and organization that provides the greatest number of Power Red donations.

This year marked the ninth year in a row that UTI-Avondale won the Power Red Award. In fact, UTI-Avondale participation equated to more than 125%!

Carla Fields, donor recruitment director for United Blood Services, claimed the Power Red Award would be retired in UTI’s honor, as no other organization has been able to surpass its Power Red Donations in almost a decade.

There were also other winners at the luncheon:

  • Sarah Monson, blood drive coordinator for MMI-Phoenix, received an honorable mention for coordinating blood drives that resulted in 627 Power Red Donations.
  • UTI-Avondale and MMI-Phoenix both received the Platinum Awards for the high amount of blood donations.

Grateful for the generosity of blood drive coordinators in the audience, Orrin Camp, director of center operations for United Blood Services, praised their work. “You are the cornerstone of the state’s blood supply.”

UTI, MMI and the Home Office have a long history of supplying blood to the United Blood Services. However, the real winners of the show are the 23,000 hospital patients across the state that are the recipients of the 7,000 units of blood donated by staff and students.
