Team AMSOIL/GEICO/Honda signed motorcycle for MMI student Nick Stanford during visit to MMI campus. |
At the event, students received a special “superstar” treat as professional riders Eli Tomac, Matt Bisceglia and Malcom Stewart discussed their performance the previous weekend in Anaheim, Calif. and shared what circumstances brought them into the fast-paced world of racing. The team went on to do very well a couple days later with Eli Tomac capturing his first 450SX win at the Phoenix race.
The technicians for the team were available to speak with current MMI students about the training that led them to their current positions as Supercross technicians, and give the inside scoop on how to break into the highly competitive sport as technicians and riders.
Currently, half of all Supercross pit crews are staffed by MMI graduates. The AMSOIL team is no exception ‒ three of its four crew members are MMI graduates and credit the school for putting them on the track to Supercross success. Derik Dwyer, technician for Malcom Stewart, won the $1,000 MMI/AMSOIL Top Tech Award at Saturday’s race.
When asked what advice they would give to current students whose ambition is to join a Supercross team after graduation, one technician answered, “Be in class every day. Working on a Supercross team is a seven-days-a-week job, and if you can’t show up for class, then what guarantee does an employer have that you will show up for work reliably?”
Additionally,
AMSOIL, as part of an ongoing partnership with MMI, also awarded a $5,000 scholarship to recent graduate Angela Hughs to assist with the transition from school to career. Hughs graduated in August from the Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki programs, with a 4.0 GPA and 99.84% attendance. She has been offered a position with Midland Powersports in Texas.
