UTI-Exton welcomed Alex Blackwell, driver of the Captain’s Curse Monster Truck, and area high school students to its campus. Working with UTI instructors, students learned how to apply STEM principles to motorsports careers. |
On Thursday, October 2, more than 200 students from area high schools came to
Universal Technical Institute’s (UTI) Exton campus for a Monster Jam Open House. Students had the opportunity to see the 1,500-horse power, 10,000-pound
Captain’s Curse Monster Truck and learn the science that powers the colossal machine. Captain’s Curse driver, Alex Blackwell, who also owns his own automotive shop, was on hand to discuss the types of education and skills needed for careers in professional motorsports.
Working with UTI instructors, students learned why science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are so important in today’s high-tech auto, diesel and industrial industries and got a sneak peak at UTI’s curriculum. :
· Science – The principals of thermodynamic cooling used in a compressed gas air conditioning system
· Technology – How electrical circuits work in modern vehicles
· Engineering – How hydraulics power the steering systems in large vehicles like Monster Trucks, construction machinery and mining vehicles
· Math– How compressed air multiplies braking force for heavy duty vehicles
“Events like the Monster Jam Open House really connect with kids and are a great opportunity to demonstrate how STEM principles can be applied to today’s careers in the motorsports industry,” said Bob Kessler, campus president at UTI-Exton. “Today’s automotive technicians are working on complex, high-tech machines and events like today’s give students a good sense of what a career in the industry looks like.”
