Universal Technical Institute’s (UTI) Lisle campus recently welcomed education leaders from thirteen states for the 2014 Midwest Summit for School Counseling Leadership. Hosting this event was an opportunity to inform counselors of the numerous and profitable career opportunities for students in the transportation industry.
The American Counseling Association (ACA) hosts the annual Midwest Leadership Summit to bring top school counselors together to share perspectives and discuss best practices. UTI-Lisle has been involved with this education group for several years.
After their meeting, attendees toured the new, state-of-the-industry Lisle campus. Attendees left with a greater understanding of the wide range of student support services UTI offers including counseling, housing, financial aid and scholarships.
“We heard from counselors attending the tour that they were impressed with our state-of-the-industry facility and the resources we offer students outside of the classroom,” said Julie Mueller, Lisle campus president. “We are continuously working with educators to explain the career opportunities in the transportation industry.”
On the tour, attendees learned about the numerous employment services UTI offers to help set students up for success in the industry after graduation. Counselors learned more about UTI’s efforts, which include resume development, interview training, career development classes, on-campus interview opportunities and job fairs, and employment recruitment assistance.
The transportation industry employs more than 16 million people, or one of every seven jobs in the USA. By 2022, the U.S. Department of Labor projects there will be more than 1.2 million jobs in the collision, automotive, motorcycle and marine industries. Demand will grow in the future with about half of all current technicians becoming eligible to retire within 15 years.
The Midwest Region of the ACA is comprised of thirteen states including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
