August 21, 2014 - UTI-Avondale community donates nearly enough blood to fulfill full-day’s supply

Summer time in Arizona is typically the highest use time for donor blood. Yet despite the need, it’s also the most difficult time to secure donations.

On July 15 and 16, Universal Technical Institute-Avondale hosted a blood drive that generated nearly 480 donations. The school single-handedly donated nearly enough blood to supply United Blood Services and the state with enough donations to meet the daily demand of 500 units.

“Keeping our blood supply stocked and ready to help in an emergency situation in Arizona is a difficult job in the summer,” Sue Thew of UBS said. “The support and life-saving donations from students, instructors and staff at UTI helped fulfill a critical need for blood and blood products.”

UTI-Avondale’s donations will go to save or enhance the lives of approximately 1,300 hospital patients over the next several weeks.

“We are absolutely delighted by the overwhelming response from our school community to give the gift of life to Arizonans in need,” Mike Romano, campus president, said. “UTI has a long history of supporting United Blood Services and helping them fulfill their mission to serve our community by cultivating the next generation of blood donors.”

According to the American Red Cross, nearly 78 percent of blood donations come from repeat donors.

 Added Romano, “We look forward to our next drive later this year where we hope to provide 500+ donations – exceeding a full-day’s demand for blood.”

UTI-Avondale is slated to host their next blood drive on September 16 and 17.
