Chuck Barresi, Campus President at the Norwood campus of Universal Technical Institute (
www.uti.edu), the leading provider of post-secondary education for students seeking careers as professional automotive, diesel, collision repair, motorcycle and marine technicians, was recently appointed to Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s STEM Advisory Council’s Workforce and Training subcommittee.
The subcommittee focuses on how the STEM Council can strengthen support for people entering the workforce in STEM fields, including those who may not have been well prepared or have other barriers for accessing STEM employment in Massachusetts. The Workforce Training subcommittee also examines ways to better align student education with the future needs of the economy in Massachusetts.
“I’m deeply honored to serve on the Workforce and Training subcommittee of the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council,” said Barresi. “This is an unparalleled opportunity to advocate for STEM disciplines at all levels of education in Massachusetts, one I relish as we look to prepare our students to be part of the 21st century workforce.”
The STEM Council brings together thought leaders and STEM advocates from public and private sectors, as well as legislators and educators, to help ensure that all students are educated in STEM fields, which will enable them to pursue post-secondary degrees or careers in these areas, and raise awareness of the benefits associated with an increased statewide focus on STEM. As part of the Workforce Training subcommittee of the STEM Advisory Council, Barresi will help identify proven strategies and exemplary programs that help retrain adults to find employment in the STEM fields and communicate the anticipated needs of the future workforce with the STEM Readiness group.
"The Governor's STEM Advisory Council is thrilled to have Chuck Barresi on the Workforce and Training subcommittee,” said Allison Scheff, Executive Director, STEM and Governor’s STEM Advisory Council, MA Department of Higher Education. “Chuck’s passion for helping educators understand the needs of employers and his commitment to building student interest in STEM fields will enhance our efforts to widen the STEM pipeline, especially as we work to assist the growing numbers of adult students who seek retraining in science, technology, engineering and math-related fields.”
