On June 17, 2014, Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Houston partnered with St. Luke’s Hospital to host a blood drive on the school’s campus. Starting at 8 a.m., students and staff eagerly arrived to the campus student center to offer their donation. Even though the drive was scheduled to end at 6:30 p.m., St. Luke’s stayed late to accommodate all 182 participants.
By the end of the drive, 152 units of blood were collected, which will save an estimated 456 lives.
“UTI participates in the blood drive as an effort to help give back to the community,” Campus President Darrin Brust says. “I am proud of the number of students and staff who showed up to give their support. Their effort really speaks volumes about the students and staff at UTI.”
Three times a year, UTI partners with Houston-based St. Luke Hospital to host blood drives. St. Luke’s opened its doors in 1954 has been ranked by U.S.News & World Report as one of America’s best for heart care for 19 consecutive years. Each time the UTI students and staff participate in the St. Luke’s blood drive, they display a willingness to go above and beyond to lend a helping hand to the community. Since the partnership began three years ago, UTI Houston has had 1, 674 participants volunteer and has donated 1,495 units of blood.
“If sitting down and giving blood can help save lives then I’m all in,” UTI Houston student Vaughn Stilley says. “It is a simple way to help others in our community and it makes you feel like you have done your part. I hope that if I am ever in a situation to need blood, others would do the same.”
On average, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. A critical number of voluntary donations are needed, because there is no substitute for blood. Each donation given from the blood drive can help save at least three lives.
St. Luke’s will host another blood drive in August. UTI Houston expects the student involvement to exceed June’s blood drive participation.
