July 28, 2014 - Universal Technical Institute Graduates 11 Veterans
Just one day before Independence Day, 11 veterans walked across a stage at Universal Technical Institute’s Dallas/Ft. Worth campus to receive their diplomas – marking their transition to civilian life.
The July 3, 2014, graduating class included 10 veteran men and one woman, who now have technical skills for success as civilians. Coast Guard veteran William D. Ellis delivered the class address.
In addition to recognizing them as they received their diplomas, UTI hosted a special reception for the veterans and their families after the ceremony.
“We are grateful to these veterans for their service to our country,” said Jesus Miranda, campus president. “UTI is proud to play a role in helping them make a successful transition to civilian life.”
Recognizing that student veterans have different needs from other students, UTI hosts a Veteran’s Break during school every three weeks. Located in a special area, the break provides veterans an opportunity to be together, gives UTI staff the ability to check how they are doing, and offers an opportunity for community groups to come in with services like PTSD counseling and assistance in accessing VA health benefits, among others.
UTI recently enlisted the Center for Brain Health to come on campus and train staff to understand PTSD symptoms and treatments. UTI also works with the Center for Brain Health to get treatment and therapy for their students at no cost.
Additionally, UTI will be opening a permanent Veteran’s Resource Center this fall. This area will provide a separate place for veterans to relax together, as well as housing a counseling office for the Center for Brain Health and computers for them to complete their coursework.
