Decked out in a pink-sequined Harley-Davidson shirt, Val Demings – former Orange County Police Chief and current Orange County mayoral candidate – recently toured the Orlando campus of the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI).
On weekends, Demings enjoys riding her 2004 Harley-Davidson Road King – so she was eager to visit MMI.
“When I served on the police force and had to choose between riding a motorcycle versus a horse, I chose the motorcycle because I figured that even though it’s a powerful machine, I have more control over it than a 1,000-pound-animal,” said Demings.
She served on the motor patrol police force for four years and commended MMI-Orlando for its partnerships with other organizations to teach students about motorcycle safety tips.
Demings was also impressed with the amount of hands-on training equipment and the number of industry partnerships at the school.
“It’s inspiring to see students of all ages pursuing their passion on campus,” added Demings. “I’m in awe of all the training that goes on at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. If I worked here, I don’t think I would get much done because I would constantly be looking at the bikes.”
MMI-Orlando Education Manager Rick Griffith gave the tour and UTI-Orlando President Steve McElfresh also attended.
“We were honored to have Val Demings on campus because she clearly is a bike enthusiast and understands our mission of helping change lives,” said McElfresh.
