April 14, 2014 - NASCAR Executives, Business & Education Leaders Joined North Carolina Business Committee for Education at NASCAR Technical Institute for Regional Meeting

On Thursday, March 27, NASCAR Executives and the region’s key business and education leaders conjoined at NASCAR Technical Institute to participate in a discussion with the North Carolina Business Committee for Education (NCBCE). The conversation was centered around education and workforce preparedness, and specifically, the shifting focus on education priorities necessary to prepare students for the new economy and global work environment.

The breakfast served as a platform for NASCAR to announce their new High School STEM initiative with Universal Technical Institute and helped to set the stage for a larger conversation on the intersection of business and education. 

Throughout the morning, attendees at the NCBCE’s regional meeting heard from key business and education leaders in the area, including Lt. Governor Dan Forest; Jerry Ellner, National Director of High School Development at Universal Technical Institute and NASCAR Technical Institute; Dr. Michael Lynch, Vice President of Green Innovation at NASCAR; Eric Guckian, Senior Advisor on Education, Office of the Governor; and John Dodson, Vice President of NASCAR & Community Relations at NASCAR Tech.

The morning’s discussion touched on the current state of education in North Carolina and STEM in the workplace. NCBCE representatives also discussed how, through collaborative efforts, the region’s key stakeholders can help to drive systemic changes in education that are vital to students’ success, and that ultimately will help to attract a world-class workforce in North Carolina.

“For the first time, the North Carolina graduation rate is above the national average,” said John Dodson, NASCAR Tech’s Vice President of Community and NASCAR Relations. “As educators, we must do everything in our power to ensure that we continue to provide a wealth of opportunities to our students that extends beyond the classroom and into their future careers.”

Housed in the Office of the Governor of North Carolina, the NCBCE is poised to provide ongoing support to ensure continued academic success for students across the state. One way in which it does so is through raising awareness and discussion.

NCBCE brings together business, education, policy and government leaders to work together to ensure that every student graduates from high school ready for life and work in a global society. This particular event provided the opportunity for key stakeholders across the region to participate in an open discussion, to infuse the business voice into public education, in order to move it forward.
