March 18, 2014 - Universal Technical Institute-Dallas/Fort Worth Opens its Doors to Potential Students
UTI-Dallas/Fort Worth Instructor Jesse Torres and Regional Admissions Director Travis Lathrop discuss the value of a technical education. |
With great demand for diesel and auto technicians in the North Texas area, more than one hundred high school students and their families attended a recent open house at the Universal Technical Institute-Dallas/Fort Worth Campus to learn about training opportunities to successfully prepare them for a career in the automotive and diesel fields.
During a tour of the 95,000-square-foot campus, attendees learned more about the school’s blended learning curriculum. This model features extensive “hands-on” experience supported by classroom instruction and interactive online learning. It is the same approach used by many of the industry’s top employers for training their own technicians.
Instructors like Jesse Torres, a former Universal Technical Institute student, talked about how advances in automotive and diesel technology have changed the role of technicians, requiring them to have advanced critical thinking and analytical skills.
“Today’s vehicles are highly complex, sophisticated machines,” said Torres. “You’ve got to have the ability to problem-solve and look at an issue from different angles to correctly diagnose a problem and make the necessary repairs.”
The STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills required of today’s automotive and diesel technicians translates into good wages. Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas reports the mean wage for auto technicians in Dallas County is $18.49 per hour and $20.45 for diesel technicians.
Universal Technical Institute Dallas/Fort Worth Campus President Jesus Miranda was quick to point out to potential students that it takes a strong work ethic and commitment to excellence to earn a degree from Universal Technical Institute.
“Training as an auto or diesel technician at Universal Technical Institute is hard work,” said Miranda. “Our students are expected to dress professionally, have excellent attendance and maintain a strong work ethic.”
