On Saturday, January 25, students from more than 30 local high schools participated in a Top Tech Challenge at Universal Technical Institute’s (UTI) Exton campus. Paired in teams of two, students competed against one another by completing various automotive technician tasks, including a written test, automotive part and tool identifications, and an electrical workstation test.
Dave Andrews and Jimmy Wiest, both from Gloucester County Institute of Technology in New Jersey, took home first place after securing the top scores overall on a written test and four hands-on challenges including parts and tool identification, as well as a scanner tool and electrical test.
The winning duo received a stocked UTI Snap-On® toolbox (valued at $10,000) for their high school. In addition, other top scoring teams won Snap-On gift certificates valued at $1,000 for first-place winners, $500 for second-place winners, and $250 for third-place winners.
“With so much discussion surrounding STEM education and its role in closing the skills gap, events such as our Top Tech Challenge are a great opportunity to get in front of our nation’s younger generation to encourage them to begin thinking about their careers early on and get them excited about learning how they can apply STEM principals to their coursework,” said Kevin Gero, Regional Admissions Director at UTI-Exton. “Especially for those aspiring to become automotive and diesel technicians, it’s great exposure of gaining a realistic view of what it means to pursue a career in this industry.”
After being put to the test all morning with complex challenges involving brakes, diagnostics, and electrical systems, the students and spectators enjoyed a complimentary lunch while the judges scored each team.
