The Universal Technical Institute-Dallas/Fort Worth Campus recently held its first ever Top Tech Challenge where high school students aspiring to become automotive and diesel technicians battled it out on complex challenges involving brakes, diagnostics and electrical systems. The 17 two-person teams came from schools across Texas to compete for highly coveted prizes and scholarship money to attend Universal Technical Institute-Dallas/Fort Worth.
“The teams that participated in our campus’ first tech challenge did an amazing job,” said Jesus Miranda, Universal Technical Institute-Dallas/Fort Worth Campus President. “It is inspiring to see what the next generation of technicians can already accomplish. We hope these students choose to attend Universal Technical Institute in the future to further develop their skills so they can go on to successful careers in the automotive or diesel industry.”
Gilmer High School’s team of Jacob Tarrant and Cory Wilson claimed victory after the intense competition. In addition to each receiving a $1,000 scholarship to Universal Technical Institute, a brand new Snap-on Toolbox filled with $10,000 worth of tools will be delivered to their school next month. Tarrant also walked away with the first place individual prize and received a digital multi meter for his accomplishments. Teams from Ratteree Career Development Center in Irving claimed second and third place, earning the second place team members each a $500 scholarship and the third place team members $250 scholarships.
After the intense competition, the teams took a campus tour, met with instructors and learned about the campus’ blended learning curriculum that offers more convenience and training flexibility for its students. Staff members were also present to answer questions on financial aid and housing and provide information on key employers in the area that employ Universal Technical Institute graduates like Park Place Dealerships, Sewell Automotive Companies and BMW of Dallas.
