December 13, 2013 - UTI-Orlando Grad Turns Love of Engines Into Dream Career

One year ago, aside from changing the oil in his own car, UTI-Orlando graduate Shawn Mcgettigan knew very little about maintaining and repairing automobiles. What he did know was that he loved anything with an engine, so it was only appropriate that he search for a school that would equip him with the skills to become an automotive technician.

Now, he is an apprentice service technician at Auto Nation Ford in St. Petersburg, Fla., and can diagnose electrical and engine performance issues, complete engine swaps and even rebuild six-speed transmissions.

“After taking my initial tour at UTI, I could tell that the school made sure the students received the most up-to-date teaching aids and equipment,” said Mcgettigan. “I’ve been in the field for three months and I’ve encountered much of the same technology that I used in the classroom.”

Maintaining Proper Alignment

Being married, working in the mornings and going to school at nights was not easy for Mcgettigan. But, he was determined and excited to study a number of areas, including electronics, brakes and suspension. He also enrolled in the Ford Accelerated Credential Training, which is one of three manufacturer-specific advanced training programs offered on campus. During the 15-week program, he learned about the equipment and procedures used in Ford and Lincoln service departments across the nation.

The certifications not only allow him to work on almost any service, it played a major part in Mcgettigan securing a job prior to graduation.

“I’m doing what I love and commute just five minutes to work,” added Mcgettigan. “UTI trained me to be hardworking, professional and of course, how to do much, much more than change my oil.”
