With 40.5 million used vehicles sold in 2012,* the demand for ongoing car maintenance and quality service is high. Univision, Houston’s leading TV station, realizes this demand creates a need for informative content to the city’s many drivers and decided to partner with the Universal Technical Institute- Houston (UTI) campus to create weekly segments on this topic.

Each Tuesday, during Primera Edición from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m., UTI-Houston instructor, Francisco Vasquez, brings Houstonians car care tips and explains how technicians work on today’s vehicles. Vasquez teaches auto and diesel electrical courses that include; basic electrical,  electronic technology and electronic diagnostics at UTI. Vasquez started his teaching career at the school in 2006 after being in the auto field for more than 20 years.

The first Sobre Ruedas segment, aired July 30 and Vasquez discussed “changing your own oil.” Each segment accompanies a review of a new automobile from different manufacturers.

Throughout the segments, Vasquez has provided expert tips on everything from repairing cracked windshields to how often fluids should be changed, and how to check tire pressure or wear and tear. Vasquez also intersperses additional information to educate viewers on how technicians work in the field, often displaying tools and explaining the education required for particular repairs.

“Participating in this type of media coverage is exciting,” Vasquez said. “I enjoy highlighting how we teach UTI students. Plus, it is fun to educate not only my students but the general public in this format.”

Univision Houston reaches 2.9 million viewers and a dedicated Hispanic market though its programing. The TV station records segments once a month at the UTI-Houston campus highlighting UTI students using the tools in their coursework and labs.
