November 6, 2013 - NASCAR Tech Hosts Two-Day STEM Event for more than Thirty High School Career and Technical Educators

NASCAR Technical Institute recently organized and hosted a two-day STEM event at the Mooresville, North Carolina campus on October 11-12. More than thirty high school Career and Technical Educators and Instructors from multiple states attended the summit and received twenty hours of specialty training that included both live shop work and class work.

Leading up to the event, the NASCAR Tech education team spent countless hours planning and creating live STEM shop experiences for the instructors to participate in with the hope that they could take back with them the knowledge and user experiences to teach in their own classrooms.  Instructors had the opportunity to participate in the brand new NASCAR UTI CTE Instructor Workshop and Exercises, which involved class and lab instruction on the role that science, technology, engineering and math play in the NASCAR industry.

The group also toured a Race Shop and the live garage at the NASCAR Nationwide Race, both of which demonstrated STEM application in various motorsports careers. The instructors had the chance to meet celebrities of the sport, including Ricky Craven and Richard Petty, and witnessed STEM in action while in attendance during the night race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. They also visited the NASCAR Hall of Fame in downtown Charlotte, where they learned via interactive exhibits how STEM is applied in almost every aspect of motorsports.

“The reaction we’ve received from attendees of this event has been extremely positive thus far,” said Jerry Ellner, National Director of High School Development for Universal Technical Institute. “Career and Technical Educators have been the pioneers of STEM and the Common Core. Understanding the application of science, technology, engineering and math in real world applications cannot be learned in a lecture hall.  Career and Technical Educators have been making that crosswalk come alive for students and they are the humble heroes of today’s education.”

UTI Field Representatives will continue to collect feedback as they visit the instructors’ classrooms over the next few weeks to follow up and schedule the new NASCAR UTI High School Workshop and Exercise in classrooms. This workshop is an interactive and challenging classroom exercise that combines real NASCAR Videos with STEM calculations to help drivers win a race, and more so, to provide a unique learning experience in common core applications of academics. It is one of many tools to help demonstrate to high school students how STEM is applicable in so many different areas and how many career opportunities STEM has to offer.
