October 10, 2013 - UTI-Exton Hosts Bi-Annual Car Seat Inspection Event on Campus to Coincide with Child Passenger Safety Week

Universal Technical Institute in Exton hosted its third car seat inspection event on Saturday, September 21 at its campus. The bi-annual event, which fell on National Seat Check Saturday, was free and open to the public.  Sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), National Seat Check Saturday is part of Child Passenger Safety Week, September 15-21, a week dedicated to helping parents and caregivers make sure their children ride as safely as possible every time they are in vehicles.

During UTI’s event, certified technicians and representatives from the Chester County Sheriff’s Department and Safe Kids Chester County Coalition inspected the installation of children’s car seats and educated parents about maintaining a safe car seat. New to the event this year, UTI-Exton partnered with Walgreens who had representatives onsite to administer pertussis/whooping cough vaccines to children, as well as flu vaccines to adults.

UTI also provided complimentary refreshments and activities for kids to enjoy during the inspections, including hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, hopscotch and a popcorn machine.

The goal of National Seat Check Saturday is to teach caregivers how to properly install and use car seats, as well as ensure children are in the right seats for their ages and sizes. According to the NHTSA, car crashes are the leading cause of death for children up to 12 years of age in the United States. To best protect children in crashes, car seats must be installed properly, but three out of four car seats are not used correctly.

This event demonstrated UTI-Exton’s commitment to training skilled automotive and diesel technicians to help keep drivers and their families safe on the road. It also served as an opportunity for UTI to strengthen its relationships via partnerships, both recurring and new, with local safety organizations.

UTI-Exton’s car seat inspection event is just of several ways the campus is building awareness and strengthening ties within the community, while at the same time helping to provide a solution to a national issue.
