October 7, 2013 - Telemundo Los Angeles Spotlights STEM Careers at UTI-Rancho Cucamonga

Like thousands of other veterans re-entering the workforce, the reality of coming home and caring for his family put Navy veteran Carlos Sosa’s dreams on hold. With a wife and daughter to support, a mortgage and other bills, Sosa’s daily routine got in the way of his professional dreams of becoming an automotive technician.

However, with the help of Universal Technical Institute in Rancho Cucamonga, Sosa was able to find a balance between caring for his family and pursuing his passions. Sosa shared with Telemundo Los Angeles (KVEA-TV) on September 18, 2013 how he was able to return to his automotive passion.

“I reached a point when I realized that there had to be something more. I had to do more and finish something that I started a long time ago,” Sosa told Telemundo.

Sosa explained how he was able to pursue a career as an automotive technician without a bachelor’s degree thanks to UTI – Rancho Cucamonga.

UTI – Rancho Cucamonga Director of Education and Operations Migdalia Vasquez-Valle shared with Telemundo that UTI’s automotive and diesel programs fall under the Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) field – a field in which, unfortunately, Hispanics are underrepresented, making up only 10 percent of the STEM workforce.

Valle explained some of the benefits of pursuing a technical career at UTI, including available financial aid and employment opportunities after graduation.

“These courses can be completed in a year to a year and a half,” Valle said. “Basically, three to six months after graduating, most of our students are working and earning a good salary.”

Sosa encouraged Telemundo’s viewers to learn more and take advantage of available STEM career opportunities.

“It’s never too late. I’m a living example,” Sosa said.
