Students at Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) in Phoenix are not only passionate about becoming technicians, but also want to make a mark in helping the community through a variety of activities.
Recently, the MMI-Phoenix student council and staff hosted a car wash in partnership with the Imago Dei Community Church to raise money for the Crisis Nursery, Arizona Valley’s longest serving children’s shelter for victims of abuse, neglect or homelessness. The church hosted the event in its parking lot and provided the water tanks while the staff of MMI donated the towels, buckets, soap and hoses. A portion of the proceeds raised from the event were donated to the Crisis Nursery.
The Crisis Nursery opened 35 years ago and has provided a safe haven for more than 20,000 children in the greater Phoenix area. Services offered are child-centered and family-focused to strengthen families and address the social, psychological and developmental needs of each child. There are four programs offered: Children’s Shelter; F.A.C.E.S (Families And Children Experiencing Success); Foster Care and Family Support Coordination.
Kent Washington, a student in the BMW, Kawasaki and Suzuki programs, as well as a member of the student council, said this was something the council wanted to do for the community.
“This was a group effort and a fun event to do,” Washington said. “We wanted to get involved in a good cause and do something positive in the community.”
Carrying on that goal, the additional funds raised at the car wash are going towards the purchase of pink silicone bracelets for October, which is breast cancer awareness month. The student council will sell them for $2 each and all proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen foundation in Arizona.
“The MMI-Phoenix student council members are a group of individuals that are willing and eager to give extra – whether it be running a bake sale, a car wash, assisting the blood drives and registrations, or any other event that is held on campus big or small,” said Dawn DeZwaan, student affairs advisor and event coordinator.
