August 22, 2013 - UTI-Exton Grad One of 12 Qualified Technicians to Work on Specific Military Vehicle

Peter Henkels never really thought his story was interesting; it had just been his life for so long. But as one of only 12 technicians in the world to work on specific military equipment, his story is anything but ordinary.

Henkels, a native of Downingtown, PA, served in active duty in the Army for nearly 11 years. Upon leaving the military, he decided to pursue his passion for cars by attending Universal Technical Institute in Exton (UTI). At UTI, he studied automotive and diesel technology, learning how to diagnose, maintain and repair auto and diesel vehicles. After graduating, he worked at top-notch companies within the industry, eventually landing at JCB.

At JCB, Henkels works in the military products division, combining his veteran experience and technical training. Since March of 2010, he has been stationed in Afghanistan working on HMEE-1 vehicles (High-Mobility Engineer Excavator Type I), 57-mph, bullet-proof vehicles with tires and windows weighing 750 and 300 pounds apiece, respectively. Henkels – currently only one of 12 people in the world that are trained to work on the vehicle – repairs HMEE-1s for the Army and trains its technicians to maintain the equipment.

Though this position is highly specialized and unique, Henkels credits his success to his experience at UTI: “UTI really did change my life. The instructors were phenomenal – from providing hands-on training to preparing me for job interviews. They’ve really helped me to get where I am today.” And if he chooses to move on from his current job, he’ll look to head back to UTI for more technical education. “Boats would be a really cool thing to work on, after this experience,” says Henkels, of his interest in attending Marine Mechanics Institute, a division of UTI, in Orlando, FL.
