The staff at the UTI-Norwood campus recently visited more than 200 career and technical education students at the Southern Adirondack Education Center in Hudson Falls, New York, bringing a NASCAR racecar, a truck built by UTI-Norwood students and a motorcycle for an on-site educational field trip. The high school students were able to explore the vehicles and ask questions about the engines, and learn about advanced training opportunities in automotive and diesel technology.
“It was exciting for the students to be able to sit in an actual NASCAR vehicle and look under the hood, imagining what it might be like to drive a racecar or work on its engine,” said Ray Cole, Automotive Technology instructor at Southern Adirondack Education Center, who helped coordinate the visit from UTI-Norwood.
Cole said Career and Technical Education programs provide students with academics that are relevant to the real world and offer hands-on demonstrations and learning experiences for the students. Students from the Power Sports Technology, Welding, Machine Tool Technology, Heavy Equipment and Automotive Technology programs participated in the event.
Chad Saddlemire, field admissions representative for UTI-Norwood, said STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) is an integral part of these programs and it’s important for students to connect what they learn in the classroom to real-world opportunities and careers. For example, an automotive technology course about engines covers math concepts including 3D geometry, and principles of physics when learning about torque and friction.
“We met many students when we attended the Center’s open house in the fall, and are glad to have the chance to come back to share these vehicles and help support hands-on learning opportunities for the students,” said Saddlemire.
