June 24, 2013 - Diesel Technicians in Demand

The message rang out loud and clear: There’s a need for diesel technicians. Now!

Recently, Peterson Caterpillar in San Leandro, one of the premiere diesel repair shops in the Bay Area, opened its doors to interested high school students and demonstrated the many benefits of a career as a diesel technician.

Peterson mechanics offered tours of their facility and answered numerous questions about their jobs. They also showed students a broad range of engines that diesel technicians generally repair. And it wasn’t just truck and tractor engines, but also busses, RV’s and even generators.

Jim Knowles, editor of the San Leandro Times, attended the career day and wrote an intriguing front page story about the event. Click here to read the entire story.

“Diesel mechanics are in high demand in areas you wouldn’t normally think,” according to education director Don Black of Universal Technical Institute – Sacramento. “Agriculture, railroad and mining operations all hire diesel mechanics. Jobs locations can be as varied as working in a local shop to working on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean.”

Another misnomer is that diesel mechanics are just wrench-turners.

“The day of turning a wrench to fix an engine is quickly becoming obsolete,” Black explained. “These days, computerized diagnostics are used to identify problems and determine which repairs or replacement parts are necessary.”

The Universal Technical Institute-Sacramento campus offers an array of heavy-duty diesel classes to help students master the skills they need to obtain a career as a diesel technician.
