June 18, 2013 - 3M and Service King Present Scholarships to Universal Technical Institute Houston Students

HOUSTON (May 30, 2013) – In recognition of National Military Appreciation Month Universal Technical Institute Houston honored two graduates and two current students with scholarships from the Collision Repair Education Foundation  last week. Service King and 3M timed their scholarship presentations appropriately when they presented not only a check to one student, but tools and toolboxes to others.

As a part of the 3M Hire Our Heroes program, the Collision Repair Education Foundation and 3M extended scholarships to two current UTI students in Houston. James Gill, a five-year Army veteran, and Jeremiah Kuehl a 13 year Army Police Veteran, both nearing completion of the Collision Repair and Refinish program, received the $2,500 worth of tools.

“As a husband and father of four, I feel blessed to have been selected for this scholarship,” said Kuehl. “Family comes first for me, then the tools for my career. The Hire Our Heroes scholarship makes it easier to provide for my family and further my career.”

The Collision Repair Education Foundation also selected five national collision students that have immediate family members that served or are serving in the military as scholarship winners. Each student received a $2,500 scholarship to help with their education costs. Graduate Matthew Adams, was selected to receive the $2,500 scholarship and was additionally given a toolbox from Service King at the May 20 presentation. In addition to his father currently serving in the Marines and his mother a Marine veteran, Adams served four years in the Army Reserve.

“Serving in the military was something engrained in me from my family,” said Adams. “Attending UTI was my choice and I couldn’t be prouder to receive this scholarship from Service King and 3M. Plus, now I have a place to store my tools that are currently left loose in my truck.”

Military veteran, Sherdrick Wilson, who graduated beside Adams and now works with him at Green River Coatings, also received a toolbox from Service King.

The 3M Hire Our Heroes program contributes a target amount of $250,000 to the Collision Repair Education Foundation and Operation Comfort, based on sales of select popular 3M products. The goal is to provide returning veterans who are pursuing careers in the collision repair industry with support and funding for education.

Last month, the Collision Repair Education Foundation and 3M selected 59 winners for the first round of Hire Our Heroes awards. The winners included students from across the country that are currently studying collision repair, and who have served or are currently serving in the military. Each winning student had the opportunity to select $2,500 worth of tools to help them in their education and for employment after graduation.
