June 3, 2013 - UTI-Exton Hosts Inaugural Car Seat Inspection Event

Universal Technical Institute in Exton hosted its first-ever car seat inspection event on campus on Saturday, May 18. Held in conjunction with National Safe Kids Day – a global initiative to raise awareness and funds to protect children from injury – the free event drew multiple families from the surrounding Chester County community.

Certified technicians and representatives from the Chester County Sheriff’s Department inspected the installation of children’s car seats and educated parents and parents-to-be about maintaining a safe car seat. UTI also provided entertainment and snacks for kids to enjoy during the inspections.

“UTI understands the importance of safe driving and is committed to training top-notch technicians to inspect, maintain and repair vehicles to help keep drivers and their families safe on the road,” said Steve McElfresh, Interim Campus President at UTI-Exton. “By partnering with local safety organizations, we’re able to expand that commitment and encourage the community to take an extra step in their child’s safety through these car seat inspections.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car crashes are the leading cause of death for children up to 12 years of age in the United States. To best protect children in crashes, car seats must be installed properly, but three out of four car seats are not used correctly. To ensure it is correctly installed, the NHTSA recommends visiting a child passenger safety technician or attending a car seat check event.

Throughout the event, technicians inspected and properly installed two dozen car seats. “Even if one life is saved, today was a success,” said Sgt. Matthew Tocydlowski of the Chester County Sheriff’s Department.
