May 30, 2013 - Learning the UTI Way

Students aren’t the only ones soaking up the knowledge at the Universal Technical Institute (UTI) campus in Sacramento. Sometimes it’s teachers as well.

The UTI campus played educational host to more than 60 visiting high school auto shop teachers from throughout the country, providing some innovative state-of-the-art technology training during two days in March.

The teaching contingent, who came from as far away as Massachusetts, Alaska, Montana and South Carolina, visited Sacramento to listen and learn regarding the ever-changing automotive industry.

UTI provided a two-day, information packed learning environment for an attentive group of auto shop instructors. Visiting a post-secondary school provides the instructors with training in a facility that is equipped with the modern technology and equipment they need to learn and take back to their students, who become aware of the skills they need to be successful in the industry.

“Teachers need to stay on top of their field, and UTI Sacramento is uniquely qualified to be able to provide teachers with the training they need,” said education director Don Black. “Our 245,000 square-foot campus has the most up-to-date equipment provided by manufacturers like Ford and Toyota, who equip our classrooms with the latest vehicles and technology needed to train the next generation of auto technicians.”

While on the UTI campus, the teachers attended various workshops, which even included grant writing. The group learned how to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects into their classrooms. They also received presentations from National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) STEM Review and an Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR).

While the emphasis was on learning, there was also some fun involved. The auto shop instructors used the collision and repair facility for some friendly competition in a hood painting competition.

Teachers departed UTI Sacramento with certificates for completion of the program, and also obtained valuable hours that can be added toward their continuing education units.
