May 8, 2013 - UTI-Norwood Hosts Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce Education and Business Seminar for High School Students

UTI-Norwood (www.uti.com) hosted the annual Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) Education and Business seminar earlier this year. More than 100 students from schools in the 12-town region southwest of Boston known as the Neponset Valley attended the three-panel discussion with members of the business community.

The NVCC formed the Education and Business Committee to encourage a dialogue between schools and businesses. During the seminar, the panelists shared their personal stories with the students, including details on what they were like in high school, their proposed career paths, and advice on internships, funding, resume writing and interview skills.

“Today’s students are anxious but excited about their post-high school plans. Yet often the process seems daunting and restrictive, as they think whatever they choose now boxes them in for life," said Cristoff Shay, Vice President of Programming and Communications for the NVCC.

The NVCC Education and Business seminar featured keynote speaker Kupah James, a student mentor and motivational speaker. Panelists included local entrepreneurs and representatives from industries such as banking, insurance and healthcare. UTI panel participant Dan Poor, Area Market Manager for the Norwood campus, shared his experiences that led him to a career in automotive technology and education.

“It’s important for high school students to know that the career they choose to pursue as a high school senior may not be what they stick with, and that it’s OK to change their minds and end up doing something different. They need to realize that a change in their educational or career choice is creating a new opportunity for success,” said Poor.

Poor acknowledged how important it is for students to learn about a variety of career options first-hand at educational field trips like the NVCC seminar that the Chamber organized.
