May 6, 2013 - UTI-Norwood Hosts STEM Workshop for High School Automotive Instructors

On March 2, 2013 UTI-Norwood (www.uti.com) hosted their popular annual workshop for high school automotive instructors about transforming technical high school automotive programs into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs. More than 100 CTE (Career and Technical Education) instructors from seven states attended the full-day workshop, which included a STEM tour, hands-on STEM activities, internal STEM field trips, a rebranding workshop and a grant writing workshop.

“The popularity of these workshops and the willingness of the instructors to give up their weekend attests to the passion they have for STEM-based curriculum in their respective high schools,” says Jerry Ellner, National Director High School Development for UTI.

The workshops focused on the importance of identifying how STEM education is already a focus of high school automotive education curriculum. For example, an automotive technology course about engines covers 3D geometry, physics (torque and friction), and other math concepts. By rebranding their existing high school courses, instructors can help champion the importance of STEM education and highlight the STEM education they are already doing. Additionally, students will earn STEM credits needed for graduation requirements.

The classroom lessons and workshop tours helped drive home how STEM is built into various aspects of an automotive technology education. The CTE instructors visited UTI labs, workshops, and classrooms to see how UTI integrates STEM in its automotive curriculum, how it relates to specific hands-on instructional areas, and how this might be similar to programs offered at technical high schools.

UTI and Snap-on Tools (www.snapon.com) co-sponsored the workshop at UTI-Norwood, which was third in a series of six similar events at UTI campuses nationwide. The workshop offers the instructors 10 professional development credits.
