April 22, 2013 - Former UTI Student Finds Himself Back At Alma Mater – As An Instructor

When Juan Ramos first came to UTI-Glendale Heights as a student in 1999, he had no idea he’d be back there almost ten years later as an instructor, providing students with the same mentorship, support and top-notch education that he received when he enrolled in UTI’s in auto, diesel, and industrial program, with specialized training in the Mercedes Benz ELITE program.

Ramos’ road back to UTI included successful pit stops along the way. After graduation, he was hired by industry and worked in Chicago and Florida as a Mercedes Benz technician. He enjoyed his career so much that he became a Master Certified Technician and a Team Leader.

While at Mercedes Benz, Ramos was recognized for the leadership and guidance he offered colleagues. It was because of those mentoring experiences that he knew the next steps for him involved teaching, so in 2008, he decided to return to UTI, and accepted a job as an instructor.

“In the beginning I was nervous and unsure. But with time, I developed my own style. I am now able to guide my students through the materials and lab work, share my real-world automotive experience and prepare them to be the best entry-level technicians in the industry,” said Ramos.  “I am lucky that I have been able to put my passion to work at UTI and in turn, they have given me the opportunity to develop as a teacher on many levels.”

Today, Ramos is an integral part of the UTI team. Although he enjoyed his years working directly as an auto technician, he knew he made the right choice to change careers. He believes that being an instructor at UTI is more than just a job.

“The students come here because they are looking to fulfill their passion, just like I did when I was a student,” Ramos said. “The UTI staff is not only technically knowledgeable, but we also offer a personal touch because we want to help our students succeed.”

“Our best instructors are often former students because they are able to connect on a personal level and relate to the pressures and desire to make a positive life-change,” said Julie Mueller, campus president of UTI-Glendale Heights. “Juan is a great reminder to our staff and instructors that we help train and equip our students to be successful in life.”

Ramos fully credits his decision to enroll at UTI with helping put him on a path towards professional and personal success. While he is proud of what he’s achieved professionally, Ramos’ personal growth and success are equally important. Married and the proud-father of a six month old, he’s set some new goals for the future.

“I’ve learned to be goal orientated and being able to live my dream and follow my interests and provide for my family has been wonderful,” concludes Ramos. “My new goal is to travel with my wife and 6 month-old baby, and show the world to my family.”
