April 18, 2013 - UTI-Avondale Graduate and Veteran Wins Roger Penske Outstanding Student Award

Hard work, determination and passion for what you do goes a long way. In fact, those attributes earned Universal Technical Institute (UTI) graduate and 22-year-old military veteran, Patrick Hoisington a $12,000 award towards his automotive technician training. Hoisington was awarded the Roger Penske Outstanding Student Award in Feb. 2013. Chosen from 10 finalists, Hoisington received the top award with each of the other finalists from UTI campuses receiving $500.

The Roger Penske Outstanding Student Award was established to recognize exceptional UTI students dedicated to succeeding in the automotive service industry and demonstrating the ability to assist other students to follow suit. Award candidates must meet certain criteria including high academic achievement, a track-record as a team player and supporter of his or her fellow students.

Hoisington embodies the role of exceptional student. He served as Student Council president at both UTI-Avondale in Ariz. and at NASCAR Technical Institute (NASCAR Tech) in Mooresville, N.C. Hoisington was encouraged by UTI employees to apply for the award based on his accomplishments.

He credits much of his success at UTI to his instructors.

“My instructors bring real-life stories and scenarios to the classroom because they work or have worked in the field, and many are master technicians. They are more than instructors, they’re mentors. They have a great impact on students."

Although Hoisington began his path at UTI after serving 22 years in the U.S. military, his interest in the automotive and diesel industry began long before he enlisted, and was the focus of his military training and service. Hoisington has completed UTI’s Automotive, Diesel and Industrial Technology Training program, Cummins Engine and Cummins Power Generation electives, as well as the NASCAR Technician Training program. He currently works as a mechanical technician for Viva La Raza Racing – the first Mexican-owned NASCAR team currently racing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series.
