March 25, 2013 - Married Couple, Air Force Veterans Pursue Automotive Education Together at UTI-Exton

When Dave Martin joined the Air Force over four years ago, he didn’t expect to fall in love and find his wife. But when he entered a church one afternoon and met a woman named Kate, everything changed. “I knew right then that I was going to marry him,” she said. And two and a half years ago, she did.

Now the couple, who lives in Reading, is spending time together on a new journey: attending Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in Exton, PA. At UTI, the couple can explore their individual automotive passions that they cultivated together. Dave Martin’s passion for cars was palpable from when he was a child; in fact, his first word was truck! His interest in the automotive field was so contagious that Kate Martin couldn’t help but want to know more. As the two spent more time together in the Air Force, Martin grew to love cars as well. When they both finished their duties, they decided to use that common interest to further their bond.

In July, Dave Martin began the Automotive, Diesel & Industrial Technology Training Program at UTI, coming home to tell his wife all of the exciting hands-on experience he was gaining. And just four months later, Kate Martin joined her husband at UTI in the Automotive Technology Training Program. On their hour-long car rides to and from school, they review lessons, talk shop and discuss their future plans.

When they both graduate just weeks apart at the end of 2013, the Martins will enjoy more time together working on cars. They’re starting a collection of antique cars, including a 1964 Dodge Polera, and plan to use their training to help the local community. “We’re looking forward to using our skills as a ministry outreach for people in need, such as a single mom who can’t afford an oil change,” said Kate Martin.
