March 22, 2013 - Marine Mechanics Institute and Portland Yacht Services Host Marine Troubleshooting Competition for Local High School Students

Due to the high demand of qualified marine technicians in the state of Maine, Marine Mechanics Institute (a division of Universal Technical Institute) and Portland Yacht Services recently hosted the 2nd Annual Maine Marine Troubleshooting Competition. Held in conjunction with the Maine Boatbuilders Show, the marine-specific skills competition tested high school students’ ability to identify and repair a variety of electrical problems within several console mockups.

Nine teams of junior and senior high school students participated in the event.

“This was an opportunity to showcase the rising talent in Maine’s marine industry,” said John Lewis, planning committee member and field admissions representative at Universal Technical Institute (UTI). “According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, marine technicians are in high demand, with an average starting salary of $37,170. Skill events like this one highlight the fact that students who enjoy hands-on work and problem solving are needed in our workforce.”

Results from the event are as follows:

The winning teams earned scholarship awards courtesy of UTI and Portland Yacht Services, which can be used at any UTI campus. In addition, the top three teams received a set of Snap-on tools.
“Our students are always looking for opportunities to relate what they’re doing to the real world,” said Gerald Gherardi, instructor at Portland Arts & Technical High School. “The troubleshooting competition was an excellent learning experience and we thank Universal Technical Institute and Portland Yacht Services for supporting skills events like these that help our students focus on careers.”
