March 21, 2013 - Universal Technical Institute Dallas/Ft. Worth Student Does It All

Nina Bourland is always on the go. As student government president of the Universal Technical Institute Dallas/Ft. Worth campus where she is enrolled in the Automotive & Diesel Technology II program, she is constantly looking for ways to help her classmates succeed. She takes classes during the day and spends her evenings as a full-time diesel technician at Schneider National. Even though most people would have a hard time just juggling work and school, Nina’s schedule also includes freelance work as a professional photographer and playing on a professional women’s football team. And, if that’s not enough to make your head spin, she’s also busy raising six children with partner Santina. It’s a schedule most of us could never handle, but Nina does it all with a smile.

Nina and her family were recently featured in the McKinney Courier Gazette (http://www.scntx.com/articles/2013/03/07/news_update/1391.txt), her hometown newspaper. The story chronicles Nina and Santina’s dedication to helping children in need. Together, they have fostered close to 40 children, as many as eight at one time. In the last few years, they adopted six of the children they fostered to give them a stable, nurturing home life.

“I’m living the dream,” said Nina. “If I could just touch one kid’s life I’d be happy for the rest of my life. I get to touch the lives of six children each and every day.”

Even though it’s tough at times, her family is fully supportive of her attending UTI-Dallas/Ft. Worth to further her education.

“I knew I was home when I visited the Dallas campus,” Nina said. “It’s top notch. They teach you how to deal with the older technology while keeping you up-to-date with the new technology being introduced.”

Nina will graduate in July and hopes to work a few years in the field before coming back to Universal Technical Institute – this time as an instructor.
