March 13, 2013 - Universal Technical Institute “Revved” Up to Host Job Shadow Day with Junior Achievement

Students in the auto technology programs at Lake Mary High School and St. Cloud High School recently visited Universal Technical Institute’s (UTI) Orlando campus to participate in a STEM Job Shadow Day with Junior Achievement of Central Florida. The local high school students learned about how STEM skills are used in the auto industry and also toured the campus.

From working on internal combustion engines, to running computer- controlled diagnostic tests …science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills are core proficiencies for auto technicians.

Nearly 50 students participated in the job shadow event at UTI. The school is the leading provider of post-secondary education for students seeking careers as professional automotive, diesel, collision repair, motorcycle and marine technicians – with 11 campuses nationwide.

“It’s critical that we address the needs of a 21st century workforce,” said Bill Price, auto instructor at St. Cloud High School. “There are different options available to students depending on their career goals. Asking questions early and identifying the right path is important for young people to do.”

As for future employment, students interested in the auto industry have plenty of opportunities. The auto industry has a serious shortage of master technicians, and demand is high as many technicians are retiring. In addition, the nation’s demand for auto technicians is expected to grow by 17 percent from 2010 to 2020, adding 124,800 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Junior Achievement is the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, free enterprise, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
