March 7, 2013 - U.S. Veteran Matthew Blum Embarks on New Journey

Mention math and most people visibly shudder. Ask Universal Technical Institute-Dallas student and U.S. veteran Matthew Blum about math and watch his eyes light up. Numbers, formulas and equations have held fascination for Blum ever since he was a kid growing up in a small Oregon town.

“I like how math is totally black and white,” said Blum. “You’re either right or you’re wrong. There’s nothing subjective about it.”

Blum always knew he wanted to do something that combined his passion for math and all things technical with his love of building and fixing things. It only took one visit to his high school by a Universal Technical Institute representative for Blum to decide that being an automotive or diesel technician was the perfect job for him.

“I really like that being an auto or diesel technician is a hands-on job,” said Blum. “And it requires math and problem-solving skills, which are right up my alley.”

After finishing high school, Blum put his dream to attend Universal Technical Institute on hold while he pursued another dream – serving his country. Blum joined the Marines, working on water purification systems in Japan and San Diego for four years. Blum and his wife moved to Texas after completing his service, and Blum enrolled at Universal Technical Institute’s Dallas campus.

“At first I was worried about transitioning from the military to becoming a student, but Universal Technical Institute made it easy,” said Blum. “The level of professionalism and kindness of the teachers and the staff is second to none. The campus really takes care of us, even going so far as creating regular meetings for veterans where we talk about any problems we’re facing.”

On track to graduate next April, Blum hopes to land a job in the diesel field because of all the opportunities it offers.
