February 11, 2013 - Show your car some love

Far too often we take our vehicles for granted and forget to show them love. This Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to say you’re sorry and give your car the TLC it deserves. Instructors and education managers from Universal Technical Institute’s (UTI) Rancho Cucamonga campus have been generous enough to share insight on what we can do to keep our cars looking and running great. Taking the time to show your car affection this Valentine’s Day will help you save money, stay out of the shop in between routine maintenance visits and ensure you have the coolest ride on the road.

Instructors Rod Jerls and Robert Vasquez from UTI-Rancho Cucamonga provided the following tips.

  1. Check your tire pressure – By keeping your tires properly inflated you will see an increase in your fuel economy and extend the life of the tire. - Rod Jerls, instructor
  2. Service the transmission – Service the transmission on a yearly basis.  This will keep down the wear factor and add life to the vehicle. - Rod Jerls, instructor
  3. Have your brakes inspected – Have your brakes checked each time the tires are rotated to ensure the brakes are wearing correctly. This simple inspection adds to the overall safety performance of the vehicle. - Rod Jerls, instructor
  4. Coolants and antifreeze – Keep your coolant and antifreeze levels at a 50/50 mix. This will help provide the best overall cooling and heating of the vehicle. Rod Jerls, instructor
  5. Read your owner’s manual – The owner’s manual is the most over looked part in the vehicle.  There is so much information on what our cars need; we need to pull that book out of the glove compartment and read it. - Robert Vasquez, instructor
  6.  Know your service intervals – Service intervals on new cars far exceed what they used to. At one time we were instructed to change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. Now we’re told this only needs to be done once every 5,000-10,000 miles, depending on which type of oil your vehicle uses. - Robert Vasquez, instructor

While Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to mend the relationship between you and your car, it’s important to regularly service, clean and inspect your car year-round. Thank you to all the instructors and education managers who provided often-overlooked ways to keep our cars in tip-top shape.
