January 28, 2013 - Economic Downturn Motivates Car Enthusiast to Turn Passion into Career

Matthew Stephens always had a passion for cars. So when he lost his job as an electrician in late 2009 as a result of the economic downturn, he decided to turn that passion into a career. The most important step in his journey was to enroll at Universal Technical Institute in Glendale Heights, Illinois.

“When I was a teenager, I loved cars and began taking automotive classes in high school. I really enjoyed the thrill I got working with my hands,” said Stephens, a 28-year-old native of Elk Grove Village, Ill. “When my job as an electrician ended, I began looking at careers in the automotive sector, an industry where jobs are always in demand.”

Stephens researched several technical schools. However, after touring UTI- Glendale Heights and seeing the variety of classes offered, his decision was made. The flexible schedules, training equipment, and the extensive curriculum convinced him that UTI offered the best program.

In July of 2011, Stephens graduated from UTI-Glendale Heights with a diploma from its automotive and diesel programs. Today, 16 months after graduation, Stephens is the shop manager for a fleet repair facility in Plainfield, Ill. He has been promoted three times and supervises three other technicians.

“I take pride in what I do and I love my job. Not many people can say that. I attribute it all to UTI for giving me the necessary skills to find my job and the industry knowledge to succeed,” says Stephens. “As a former student, I am thankful for UTI’s dedication to professionalism, including the strict dress code, attendance policies, and the way classes are conducted.”
