UTI-Avondale students, Patrick Fairbanks and Justin Barlage, together raised $2,500 to donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research in the few months leading up to the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk, Nov. 9-11, 2012. Fairbanks, student council president when he began the initiative, chose to support the Foundation after learning his aunt had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“UTI’s student council is very active in the community and the council members are encouraged to pursue philanthropic interests they would like to become involved in,” said Micki Greenrock, a UTI student affairs advisor. “Patrick chose a cause that affected him and his family directly, and his passion was evident in the fundraising process.”
The student council held car washes, sold snow cones and raffle tickets, among other activities, in hopes of raising $4,600 so that both students could participate in the 3-Day Walk. They managed to raise $2,500 in just three months while attending classes and holding jobs outside of their class schedules.
Though they did not raise enough funds for either student to participate in the 3-Day Walk, the student council was ecstatic to donate the entire amount to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support breast cancer research.
