January 9, 2013 - KABC-TV in Los Angeles reports Universal Technical Institute is putting students on the right track
UTI-Rancho Cucamonga Campus President Sean Carlson speaks to ABC Automotive Reporter Dave Kunz during his recent visit to the campus. |
This Thanksgiving eve, those who tuned into the 6 p.m. KABC-TV news broadcast in the Los Angeles area saw Universal Technical Institute (UTI) through the lens of automotive reporter Dave Kunz. He shared with viewers how UTI is training the next generation of automotive technicians and putting graduates to work in the automotive service industry.
Kunz visited the UTI-Rancho Cucamonga campus to speak with students and staff about how UTI is addressing the fast-approaching gap in number of automotive technician jobs versus number of trained automotive technicians. He learned that UTI’s industry partnerships with well-known manufacturers like Ford and Mercedes-Benz, help students learn on equipment directly from the manufacturer. He also discovered that there are a lot more jobs in the automotive industry than he originally thought.
During the broadcast, Campus President Sean Carlson noted the promising future of those interested in becoming an automotive technician, stating Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
UTI students have their sights set high for the growing industry.
“I’m hoping to become a master tech,” said Mandeep, then a student in the Mercedes-Benz ELITE START program. Since the broadcast, Mandeep has graduated from UTI and relocated back to his hometown of Houston, where he looks forward to exploring job opportunities utilizing his training from UTI.
KABC-TV also visited Penske Audi West Covina to talk to graduate David Sickler, who started working there after graduating from UTI. Within a few months of starting, he was promoted from an entry-level position to his current position as a service writer.
I saw an opportunity here [at Penske Audi] and went for it,” said Sickler. “I definitely see room for growth.”
As Kunz reported in his story, “The days of the so-called grease monkey are gone,” and the days of the highly qualified, UTI-trained technician are here to stay.
