January 3, 2013 - UTI-Exton’s Tour Coordinator Exemplifies Graduate Success for Latino Students

Hector Guzman, a half Puerto Rican and half Mexican resident of North Philadelphia, knew that with hard work, the possibilities could be endless. He just needed to work for it. So he studied hard in high school, graduated with a 4.0 GPA, and headed off to college. But he couldn’t forgo his desire to become an automotive technician, just like his dad.
After two years in college, Hector decided to apply to Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in Exton. He spent 14 hours a day on campus, taking automotive and diesel classes in the AM session and working as a tutor and lab assistant in the PM session –while serving as Student Council President at the same time. And when he graduated in November of 2011, he knew UTI had changed his life. What he didn’t know was that his time at UTI was far from over.
After working a as diesel technician , Hector received a call from UTI to interview for the position of Tour Coordinator. Since then, he has been relating his experience at UTI to prospective students every day: “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is talking to students and watching them evolve throughout their time here, just as I did two years ago. There’s no better feeling than that. I wouldn’t have left my job as a diesel technician for any other employer other than UTI. I’m passionate about helping potential students see the opportunities in this industry.”
As a graduate and now full-time employee at UTI, Hector is the perfect example of the success that UTI students can achieve in the automotive industry, particularly Latino students. In 2011, the Hispanic and Latino community made up 19.7% of the auto service technician workforce. For those in the Latino community interested in pursuing a career in the automotive field, an education at UTI could be the perfect fit.
