UTI-Sacramento students have been interning at GoGoGear.com Racing for three seasons, helping to prep the race cars for the US Touring Car Championship racing series.

But not just any student gets the opportunity to be in the pit for these exciting races. Students are selected and screened based on grades, attendance records and professionalism scores. After meeting these high standards, students that are selected as interns get to do a wide range of mechanical work, including changing wheels and tires, checking fluids and helping drivers get strapped in at the pre-grid area.

Last month, GoGoGear.com Racing interns from UTI had the opportunity to be in the pit for the World Touring Car Championship in Sonoma, Calif., where three student interns were selected as assistant crew chiefs who reported directly to the crew chief. One student was assigned to be the personal assistant to the series race director and was tasked with setting up in-car telemetry – a GPS tracking system called Traqmate – and got to see all the racing action from the tower.

One student even discovered a problem with the #5 BMW car, which had been overlooked during inspection. He was able to diagnose a handling/braking issue, and the part was replaced before the main race that Sunday.

“This is one of the best groups of students UTI has sent us,” said Ali Arsham, GoGoGear.com Racing team owner. “Their professionalism and attention to detail is amazing.”
