August 27, 2012 - UTI-Exton Student Continues Her Late Brother’s Legacy
Despite being a typical “girly-girl,” 21-year-old Cherrelle Bobo, always loved working on cars with her older brother, a student at Universal Technical Institute in Exton. When she expressed her desire to work in the automotive field, she faced resistance. “You’ll never survive,” her parents said – urging her to take the traditional path of a four-year college. And to meet expectations, Cherrelle spent two years in college pursuing an education degree.
But when Cherrelle’s older brother tragically passed away in the summer of 2011, she decided to continue his legacy and finally fulfill her dream. She spoke with an admissions representative, who immediately recognized her passion for working in the automotive industry.
With the support of UTI’s financial aid and employment offices, Cherrelle was awarded a scholarship and found two part-time jobs to help cover the cost of tuition and housing. She began classes in August 2011 and never looked back. Cherrelle, who also served as Student Council President, just graduated in August where she not only received her diploma, but also an honorary diploma in memory of her brother.
“Without him, there would be no me,” said Cherrelle in an interview with NBC10 & FOX29 in Philadelphia. “That’s what inspired me to come here – his journey, how much he loved it. He was so determined.”
Now, Cherrelle is heading off to UTI’s Avondale, Arizona campus to begin the highly-competitive Volvo MSAT program. Her goals include returning to the Philadelphia market, completing her education degree, and starting an automotive program for students with special needs.
