August 10, 2012 - Before They Look Under the Hood, UTI Students Give Blood
This summer, students at Universal Technical Institute in Exton are working hard on their academics and lab work, and their contributions to the local community. In July and August, the campus has participated in three separate events benefiting regional charities. And more events are lined up for the fall.
In late July, the Exton campus teamed up with the American Red Cross for its first of three blood drives in 2012. Students contributed to the drive with 540 blood donations and 8 platelet donations, putting the campus on track to break last year’s donation totals. With this level of participation, the campus has donated almost 2,200 pints of blood and 27 platelets in the past three years – saving hundreds of lives throughout the region.
“The students and staff at UTI Exton are always willing to donate to the Red Cross,” said Bethany Emery, Student Services Director at the Exton campus. “Every quarter, more and more students turn out and give. So many of them have had a family member in need of blood, or have needed it themselves, so they are truly honored to have the opportunity to give back.”
The Exton campus also participated in the Top Dead Center Motor Club’s 4th Annual “Drive Out Hunger” Car Show at a nearby high school in July. Students donated 437 of the 2,000 pounds of food collected for the Chester County Food Bank, almost 22% of all the donated food.
And in early August, UTI-Exton helped a regional breast cancer charity through its 2012 Car & Truck Show. All proceeds from the event’s dyno runs, conducted by both UTI faculty and students, benefited the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition – a statewide resource for women with breast cancer and their families.
