June 8, 2012 - Patrick Welsing's Dreams Come True After Graduating From UTI-Glendale Heights

At the age of 11, Michigan native Patrick Welsing attended his first-ever monster truck show at the Pontiac Silverdome. At the start of the event, a massive truck dubbed Blue Thunder twisted around the dirt, revved its engine, rolled over and spun its tires.

"I'll never forget it. I saw this truck do this crazy flip," Welsing said. "This truck, Blue Thunder, popped its front end, backed up, spun around and flipped. It was the craziest thing I ever saw in my life. I was hooked.”

B
y day, the 21-year-old graduate of UTI-Glendale Heights works at an Audi dealership. In his spare time, he kicks it into overdrive by volunteering at the local monster truck garage, helping staff prepare for shows or repairing equipment. His aspiration is to eventually get hired by Monster Jam. He's willing to do anything it takes to secure a spot, and others have noticed his hard work.

Typically there are two crew members per truck at each Monster Jam show. So far, Welsing has helped out with about ten shows in the past two years. The racing fan learned a great deal at UTI, gaining an understanding of the systems on the trucks and how to be prepared for diagnostic capabilities when things go wrong.

"I have a plan set out," Welsing said. "It's my dream and goal. It's in the motion of happening right now."
