Almost 20 years ago, Carlos Rivera came to the United States from Puerto Rico. Always knowing he wanted to pursue a career in motor sports, Rivera enrolled in both the motorcycle and watercraft programs at MMI-Orlando. Rivera formerly raced bikes and took his training seriously, and chose MMI because he wanted to enter the workforce properly trained and ready to work.
“I wanted to take it to a different level,” said Rivera. “That’s why I went to MMI.” Today, Rivera is the head technician for Ryan Dungey, part of Red Bull Factory KTM. Dungey’s team won the 2010 Supercross and Motocross Championships and recently won the Phoenix Supercross race on Jan. 14. When asked to describe what his job is, Rivera keeps it simple: “Everything that has to do with his [Dungey’s] bikes.”
For those seeking a career in motor sports, Rivera says that commitment and determination are crucial. Additionally, a supportive network of friends and family is important to pursuing one’s dreams.
“My family was 100 percent supportive of my choice to go to MMI,” said Rivera. “Especially my wife.” Rivera also notes his favorite moments in his career: His first Supercross race as a professional technician and the 2006 East Coast Lites Championship. This exciting and fulfilling career allows Rivera to travel to a myriad of new places during the Supercross season, criss-crossing the United States.
Before coming on board with Red Bull Factory KTM, Rivera worked at Honda and Suzuki dealerships, then moved on to Factory Suzuki and Factory Honda.
Rivera credits MMI for much of his success, saying, “I couldn’t have been here without MMI,” said Rivera. “I’m here and it’s a dream come true.”
