Dec. 5, 2011 - Maryland Student Chosen for $10,000 Brienne Davis Scholarship
The Brienne Davis Scholarship was recently presented to Alejandra Foy from Abingdon, Maryland. NASCAR Officials presented Alejandra with a trophy at Dover International Speedway and she was able to participate in a pace car ride, pit tours and work with the officials during inspection.
Alejandra and her family also had the opportunity to meet NASCAR drivers Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet, and Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet. Stewart was in fact the highest fundraiser for the Brienne Davis Scholarship Fund at a last year’s fundraising event.
“In a time where every penny counts, it’s an incredible opportunity for female students to help fund a portion of their education,” said Verne Meury, vice president and executive director of the UTI Foundation.
During her spare time, Alejandra has been working with her dad to modify his 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo and hopes to one day join a NASCAR team in the pit crew or be involved in the engineering of new vehicles.
In addition to being enrolled in her high school’s automotive program for the past four years, Alejandra, was also on her school’s track team and the assistant manager of the football team. Alejandra will attend Universal Technical Institute’s Exton, Penn. campus.
Recognizing there are many women interested in pursuing careers in the automotive industry, NASCAR and the UTI Foundation established the Brienne Davis Scholarship Fund for women seeking an automotive technical education and a career in motorsports. Davis, a Universal Technical Institute (UTI) graduate and Sprint Cup official, died tragically in 2008 at age 28, and is honored with this scholarship. Three $10,000 scholarships are given out each year.
The next entry deadline for the scholarship is Dec. 31, 2011. Interested applicants can head to the UTI Foundation website for details.
