Sept. 29, 2011 - Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) graduate Eric Romanowicz was on fire in June when he won the Yamaha United States Technician Grand Prix (USTGP) in Atlanta. USTGP is a competition pitting the top technicians from the Yamaha Technical Academy (YTA) Gold-level training courses against each other in a series of real world exercises. The competition includes electrical problem diagnosis and repair, mechanical repairs, fuel injection system diagnosis, as well as computer and people skills. This isn't a small feat; Eric's grades from the Yamaha Gold-level YTA courses were among the best in the country.
A graduate from MMI-Phoenix in 1996, Eric is a service manager at Mondus Motorsports in Hudson, Wis., one of Yamaha's Pro Dealers. He competed against the best Yamaha technicians in the country winning the overall National Skills Competition. With this win, he was awarded numerous prizes including $400 worth of Snap-on tools from MMI and a chance to compete on the world stage. In October 2012 he will be one of only two U.S. representatives in the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix in Japan.
"Today's motorsport technicians work on advanced systems that change rapidly," says Romanowicz. "Staying on top means keeping up with those changes through regular training. That training helped me get to the top this summer against some very tough competition. It's good to know the place where I started helped to support something as exciting as the Yamaha USTGP. Thanks to MMI and all those that supported this year's competition."
