Aug. 18, 2011 - In early 2010, the UTI-Glendale Heights Student Council was approached about starting a bottles and cans recycling program. Student Council members, along with the Facilities Department, had ten recycling bins brought in to pilot the program and determine if students would embrace a greener UTI. The Student Council agreed and took the lead on the program, emptying the recycle cans, washing out the cans as needed and promoting the program on campus.
Within the first few months of the trial program, the campus received an overwhelming response from students and staff to “pitch in,” thus expanding the program. The recycling program recently hit its one year mark with a total of 15 recycle bins across the campus. On average, about nine cubic yards of recycled materials are collected on a weekly basis. “With the amount of recycled material collected, the campus has reduced the pickup of waste material to twice a week, which saves money, makes for a cleaner campus, and improves our carbon footprint,” said UTI-Glendale Heights Facilities Director Wayne Cillo.
