Aug. 15, 2011 - Burnout Speeds to Finale

Aug. 15, 2011 - For the past eight weeks, MTV2 viewers have watched two teams of students and instructors from Universal Technical Institute’s Avondale campus battle against each other in a test of skill, persistence and dedication to see who can build the fastest drag car with just 100 hours of build time.

Hosted by drag race legend Clay Millican and freestyle motocross and off-road racer Carey Hart, Burnout: The Ultimate Drag Race Challenge followed 20 UTI students and four instructors as they participated in challenges and worked together to build a drag car from the ground up, all while working feverishly to source parts, keep up on schoolwork and maintain their everyday lives.

The weeks of hard work, late nights and long hours came down to just two cars and ten seconds on the strip in a final race to determine the winning team, which aired on Saturday, August 13. When the engines had stopped and the dust had settled, it was the Red Team that came out victorious.

Members of the winning team included:

·         Quincy Dukes (Kansas City, MO)

·         Darren Freed (Park City, UT)

·         James Martin (Hattiesburg, MS)

·         Chris McClaran (Phoenix, AZ)

·         “Big” John Spegal (Phoenix, AZ)

·         Lance Tsugawa (Alea, HI)

·         Danielle Walcom (Easton, WA)

·         Kristen Willner (Jacksonville, IL)

·         Victor Yarbrough (Dallas, TX)

The red team was led by UTI instructor Chris McClaran, whose logical approach kept the team grounded. Winning team members earned scholarships and both teams won fully loaded Snap-on toolboxes.
