July 27, 2011 - This year’s national SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) was held in Kansas City, MO, bringing together more than 5,700 competitors in the 96 different competitions, with 38 state champions attending from their home states to compete for the top honors in the Motorcycle Service Technology contest.
The contest was sponsored in part by Harley-Davidson University, which provided five hands-on workstations that allowed the contestants to demonstrate their technical skills on such tasks as Wheel Bearing Replacement, Digital Technician II Diagnostics, Precision Measurement of the VRSC valve lash and slipper clutch, and Cam and Oil Pump Replacement on the Twin Cam 96” engine.
To allow the contestants to demonstrate their skills in reading comprehension, service manual navigation, written and oral assessments, MMI-Orlando provided a basic theory written test, Electrical Diagnostic manual test, written essay and an oral proficiency test.
The contest was held over a two-day period, allowing all of the contestants to perform eight of the nine workstations in a single day. On day two, the contestants performed the Precision Measurement workstation over a two-hour period and then Harley-Davidson University trained the contestants on the workstations that were completed the previous day. This was done to ensure that all of the contestants understood the tasks prior to leaving Kansas City and going back to their home states.
MMI provided a $25,000 scholarship to the first place winners in both the High School and Post Secondary divisions, and UTI provided $25,000 scholarships to the First Place High School winners in Collision Repair Technology, Diesel Equipment Technology, and Marine Service Technology.
Mike O’Neil, one of UTI-Orlando’s Education Managers, has chaired this event since 2004. SkillsUSA will return to Kansas City June 23-27, 2012, for the 48th annual NLSC.
